Ani Asec. Cualoping,

"This kind of businessman is not who we need in a time of great need. He made his stand (and
backtracked?) by pushing disinformation.

"When life becomes better, Filipinos should never forget that this Mikko Lawrence Tung propagated fake news and instigated hatred and doubt on the Government. A Government that is doing everything to beat COVID-19.

I have never eaten Ligo Sardines (Philippines), and I have no intention to buy any of its products in the future. I stand with the Philippine Government."

"Last February 11, around 400 workers of A. Tung Chingco (ATC) Manufacturing Corp. in Valenzuela, manufacturer of leading sardines brand, LIGO, were displaced due to the sudden closure of the company. ATC was ordered closure by Valenzuela local government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its several violations.

LIGO workers, who are mostly contractual, are suddenly left unemployed without any assurance if they will receive any compensation or if they will still have their jobs back. CTUHR have received reports of many workers' rights violations of ATC through the years, such as labor only contracting, forced overtime, long working hours and unsafe working conditions.

We call on the workers of LIGO to unite and collectively demand for what is due to them. The ATC management should sit down with them to discuss appropriate measures that should be taken to ensure the welfare of the workers.

We also appeal to the Valenzuela LGU and DOLE to hold into account the protection of the 400 workers jobs and their families. The workers should not be punished for the violations of their employer.

UPDATE:

The company reopened on February 17. We have yet to receive confirmation from authorities if they have settled all said violations. Some workers were reinstated but some already looked for other jobs."
